Why are diamond sports fading in Oakland?

Fields in Disrepair
From cracked infields to backstops held together with duct tape, many Oakland diamonds are barely playable. While suburban fields get turf and lights, our kids play on worn-out ground with no bathrooms, no scoreboards, and often no maintenance.

The Cost of Playing the Game
Baseball and softball are some of the most expensive youth sports in America. Travel teams, gear, and training can cost thousands. Without financial aid or well-funded local leagues, many families simply can’t afford to keep their kids in the game.

A City That’s Lost Its Teams
The A’s, Warriors and Raiders are gone. That collective heartbreak has trickled down. It’s made it feel like baseball, and sports in general, are leaving Oakland behind. But we don’t believe the story has to end that way.

We don’t need more talent… We need more investment!

For generations, Oakland has been the epicenter of baseball talent. From Rickey Henderson and Frank Robinson to Dave Stewart and Jimmy Rollins, this city has produced legends! Players who came from neighborhood parks and rose to the game’s highest levels. The problem was never talent. It was always access.

Oakland is still full of diamonds in the rough, fields waiting to be restored, and kids waiting to be seen. They don’t need to be discovered. They need to be supported. With safe, well-maintained spaces to play, with affordable teams and community investment, Oakland’s next great generation is ready. All they need is the chance to step onto a field that’s worthy of their potential.
